Flowers as a sign of wealth?

Back about 400 years ago tulips were an extravagant treat that only the very rich could afford. Once upon a time these spring flowers were worth more than gold! A single Rembrandt-type bulb could cost you as much as a large house!!

I suppose if the deer in the 1620s got into your flowerbed it would be one very expensive meal for them!
